Infant Mental Health-Developmental Practice (IMH-DP) focuses on the development of children from birth to age five. Examine early parent-child relationships as the foundation for healthy social-emotional, cognitive, language and even physical development. IMH-DP training will add one additional year to your graduation date but in return, you will enter the workforce with an enhanced range of practice that prepares you to provide mental health services to high-need, at-risk children with social-emotional challenges, developmental disabilities or other special needs—as well as their families. You will play a critical role in the expanding field of child mental health.

Exceptional Hands-On Learning

At Adelphi, we believe hands-on experience is key to setting our students up for future career success. Students in the IMH-DP program will receive a range of internship experience from consultation with clients to home visits. Internship sites range from preschool and early learning classrooms to hospitals and pediatric clinics. Students will also engage in hands-on experience at our on-site Institute for Parenting which was established to help ensure the mental health and well-being of young children and developing families by strengthening the capacity of parents and others who influence their lives.

Application Requirements

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and should submit the following:

  • 15 month training program (May 2019 to August 2020, detailed course schedule below).
  • Participate in a two-day orientation prior to beginning the program in May (dates are provided upon acceptance).
  • Sign a Pre-Scholarship Agreement outlining the two-year service obligation.
  • Candidates will receive academic advisement, support and mentoring from the assistant director and a previous IMH-DP graduate throughout the duration of the program.
  • Candidates must complete 18 courses and 3 semesters of internship (Fall, Spring, and Summer) with a grade of B or better.
  • A summer experience at Adelphi’s Alice Brown Early Learning Center, focusing on developing observation, interaction and reflective skills.
  • A one-year internship (September 2019 to August 2020).
  • Complete a Cumulative Accomplishment Portfolio (CAP).
  • Weekly individual reflective supervision.
  • Weekly group reflective supervision beginning in the fall semester.
  • Interdisciplinary case conferences with faculty and practitioners from related fields.
  • Complete an Integrative Project Thesis and Presentation.
  • Sign an Exit Certification upon completion of a grant-funded certificate.
